Total Knee Replacement

tkrA total knee replacement is when the arthritic joint surfaces of the knee are replaced with a metal and plastic joint. The main reason for having a knee replacement is for pain relief.

Patients are usually admitted to hospital on the day of surgery and have a stay of 2-4 days. Most patients are discharged home walking with either sticks or, if necessary, crutches. Outpatient Physiotherapy appointments are arranged to continue rehabilitation after discharge from hospital.

Stitches are removed by your G.P or practice nurse at around 12-14 days and a follow up appointment with Mr Hopton is at 6 weeks post op.
